Sarah Beth Elkins

My work has always been a direct reflection of day-to-day inspirations. I find joy in replicating patterns, textures, and color from daily life and filtering them in and out of my work. I find the patterns and marks in my work to be very organic, yet structured all in the same. I allow each piece to dictate its own path, choosing patterns and textures that naturally flow onto the surface. With the assistance of repetition and a brain stuck in ‘GO’ mode, I find my work to be ‘controlled freestyle’. I will combine a traditional shape with a highly detailed pattern that work together. In addition, I strive for functionality. The idea that one can not only enjoy the presence of a piece of pottery, but also physically use it in their day to day is satisfactory. The idea that something made with one’s own hands that will eventually be held by another’s is a full circle concept I’m proud to be a part of. Throughout my journey as an artist, I have always implemented a variety of intricate detail and surface decoration, with experimental and bold glaze combinations. I like pushing the limits when choosing my colors. I am always researching new (and old) techniques to incorporate in my work and aim to ‘melt’ a variety of techniques to create new and innovative harmonies. Pottery is my life. I spent the last 6 years juggling teaching Ceramics and my own work, and am now a full time artist North of Houston.
